Green tea as a drink is about as safe as anything gets. Concentrated green tea extract in supplement form is a different proposition, and the difference is worth understanding before you take a product containing it.

A cup of green tea contains modest amounts of catechins — principally EGCG — alongside water, caffeine and various other compounds. Concentrated green tea extract can deliver the catechin content of many cups in a single capsule or dose, sometimes standardised to 50% or more EGCG.
Drinking green tea has an excellent safety record across enormous populations over centuries. That record does not automatically transfer to concentrated extracts, and regulators in several countries have said so explicitly.

Two caveats worth stating plainly. The effect sizes are small — meta-analyses generally find changes measured in a small number of kilograms at most over extended periods, and some find nothing. And separating the catechin effect from the caffeine effect is difficult, because most trials use both together and caffeine alone produces measurable thermogenesis.
Green tea appears in blood sugar formulas on the basis of research into carbohydrate-digesting enzyme inhibition and some trials on fasting glucose and insulin sensitivity. Findings are mixed and effect sizes modest.
This is a supporting ingredient in the category rather than a primary one, and it should be assessed that way.

Concentrated green tea extract has been associated with cases of hepatotoxicity — liver injury. These are catalogued in the NIH LiverTox database, and the pattern has been reviewed by regulatory bodies in several countries. Some jurisdictions have introduced warning requirements or dose limits as a result.
Proportion matters in both directions here. Cases are rare relative to how widely these extracts are consumed, most resolve after stopping, and the majority of people take them without incident. But green tea extract is consistently among the more frequently implicated botanical ingredients in supplement-associated liver injury reports — which is not something you would guess from how it is marketed.
Research on metabolic effects typically uses 300–500 mg daily of extract, often standardised for EGCG content. Some regulatory reviews have suggested caution above roughly 800 mg of EGCG daily from supplements.
Two practical points. Taking extract on an empty stomach appears to increase absorption and may increase risk — taking it with food is the more cautious approach. And green tea extract contributes caffeine, which matters if the product also contains guarana or another caffeine source and does not disclose the total.
Green tea extract has modest real evidence for metabolic effects at doses that most multi-ingredient blends do not deliver, and it carries a documented safety signal that most marketing does not mention. That is an unfavourable ratio.
If you want the benefits of green tea, drinking it is the option with centuries of safety data behind it and no meaningful downside. Concentrated extract is a different risk-benefit calculation, and one worth making deliberately rather than by accident because it was ingredient number seven in a blend.
